Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has said the Scottish Conservatives will go into next year’s Scottish Parliament elections with a suite of policies tailored for his region after party leader, Douglas Ross, pledged to govern for all of Scotland instead of just the Central Belt.
Mr Cameron, a member of Douglas Ross’s Scottish Conservative Shadow Cabinet, said that the Party’s virtual conference, held over the weekend, had given Mr Ross the opportunity to showcase a range of measures that had direct relevance for rural Scotland.
Mr Cameron said:
“I’m delighted that Douglas is prioritising policies that will benefit the Highlands and Islands, including a pledge to deliver full fibre broadband to every home and business, as well as a commitment to pump millions into Community Investment Deals, and provide a fair funding deal for rural councils."
“Having access to gold standard broadband is becoming an essential requirement and is currently denied to far too many areas across the region, while the £550 million pledged for the Community Investment Deals will help create skilled jobs and ensure that people won’t have to leave here to find new opportunities."
“Fair funding for our councils will mean guaranteeing them a set proportion of the Scottish Government budget each year, so the SNP won’t be able to divert cash away from our communities to fund vanity projects in the Central Belt."
“As we move on from Covid, people need hope that we will rebuild our economy and create jobs. The alternative is five more years of division and squabbling over whether we should have another independence referendum.”
