Comment: Ferry Procurement Announcement

Commenting on the Scottish Government’s hugely overdue update on ferry procurement for two new CalMac vessels for the Skye triangle routes, Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston said:

“While this is welcome, it is also long overdue from the Scottish Government.  We have endured a summer where the ageing status of our fleet has never been more apparent. Breakdowns and vessel shortages have led to islands being cut off, with real harm caused to people and communities. Economies have been hit, businesses have been damaged and people have been unable to travel – even for important appointments elsewhere."

“I hope this a sign that the Central Belt-focused SNP are finally waking up to the utter chaos they have caused to island and coastal communities with their years of inaction. Even belated progress is welcome, but there is a lot more to do and it must be part of a long-term strategic look at how our lifeline ferry services operate.  Island communities should never be sidelined and ignored in this way again.”
