Highlands and Islands Scottish Conservative MSP Donald Cameron has described Islands Minister Paul Wheelhouse as being “in denial” after the minister sought to deflect criticism of the Scottish Government’s record in procuring new ferries for the CalMac fleet.

Mr Wheelhouse has been widely criticised for his response to a damning report from the all-party Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee of the Scottish Parliament.

Mr Cameron said: “Paul Wheelhouse appears to inhabit an alternative universe to the rest of us when it comes to the utter fiasco that has been the ferry procurement programme. He appears to be in denial."

“Until the SNP Government accepts responsibility for what has happened, I very much fear that we are doomed to repeat the mistakes that have got us into this situation."

“This matter has real-life consequences for our island communities which are desperate to attract investment, create jobs, and provide opportunities for our young people.”
