Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has said that nearly £1m of UK Government funding for a tidal energy project in Orkney is good news for the islands’ developing renewable energy sector.

Magallanes Tidal Energy Ltd will receive £937,291 for their Floating Tidal Evolution project which will design a new generation floating tidal platform, based on learnings from Magallanes Tidal Energy’s current prototype being tested at the European Marine Energy Centre.

The Scottish Conservative MSP said: “Orkney already has significant strengths in renewables, so it’s good to see this financial support from the UK Government going directly to an innovative project which helps the sector develop further here, bringing jobs and investment with it.

“As we transition towards a carbon-free future, it’s encouraging to see Orkney making such an important and cutting-edge contribution to the UK’s progress in this area.”
