Scottish Mountain Rescue and Mountaineering Scotland today held a reception at the Scottish Parliament to celebrate the dedication and expertise of the volunteers and professionals who provide a world class mountain safety information, training and rescue service.
After attending the reception Highlands and Islands MSP, Edward Mountain said:
‘‘We must all be grateful for the dedication of our Scottish Mountain Rescue teams who perform heroic deeds in often dangerous conditions, all year round.
In the Highlands we are blessed to have some of the most beautiful mountains, glens and forests. But that beauty also hides dangerous paths or gorges and sometimes accidents happen.
The cost of rescue does not come cheap and it is easy to forget that these rescue teams are staffed by hardworking volunteers and funded through charity.
Accidents can be avoided if the right precautions are taken and I would advise all hikers and climbers to refresh their safety awareness by visiting the Mountaineering Scotland and Scottish Mountain Rescue Websites.”
