Highlands and Islands MSP, Edward Mountain has called for the Scottish Government to fund a new Nairn Academy school building, as part of its Learning Estate Investment Programme.

The MSP has also written to the Cabinet Secretary for Education today to make the case for a replacement building for Nairn Academy.

Edward Mountain MSP has long campaigned for more Scottish Government investment to improve the Highland school estate.

Statistics show that the Highlands is a region with one of the highest proportion of schools deemed to be in a poor condition.

Highlands and Islands MSP, Edward Mountain MSP commented:

“I’m absolutely delighted to hear that the Highland Council have nominated Nairn Academy for the Learning Estate Investment Programme.

What we now need is for the Scottish Government to sign up to this and award funding for a new school building.

I am making the case that a new Nairn Academy is desperately needed and there is no doubt in my mind that it should be a top priority for funding.

When I visited the school I saw for myself that it’s in a really poor shape. The Scottish Government cannot ignore the school’s long term problems with asbestos, faulty windows and leaks.

The pupils of Nairn Academy have waited so long for their school to be rebuilt, they deserve to learn in a modern environment.”
