On Remembrance Sunday, Edward Mountain MSP made private visits to Inverness, Rothes and Grantown on Spey War Memorials to pay his respects to all those who have sacrificed their lives to guarantee our freedoms.
The Highlands and Islands MSP served in the British Army from 1980 to 1992 in the Blues & Royals, part of the Household Cavalry, following in the footsteps of his father before him. Edward’s son is continuing the family tradition, currently serving in the Blues & Royals Regiment too.
Edward Mountain’s military service took him to Cyprus, Uganda, Germany, Canada, United Kingdom, Spain and Egypt. After leaving the army in 1992, he continued to serve as a reservist for a further six years.
Highlands and Islands MSP, Edward Mountain MSP commented:
“As a former soldier, I felt it was important to spend a moment alone at our local War Memorials to pay tribute to all those who gave their lives for our freedom and to protect the United Kingdom.
Of course it is disappointing that formal Remembrance Sunday Ceremonies were unable to go ahead this year and it is right in these troubled times that we don’t gather socially.
However, it remains vital that we find different ways to commemorate the day. We can all continue to remember the sacrifices made by taking time to visit our local War Memorials alone and adhering to the social-distancing guidelines.
I would encourage everyone to spare a few moments to pay a private visit or a silent tribute as we run up to Remembrance Day on the 11th November.”
