Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has said that ‘Future Soldier’, the plan for a radical transformation of the British Army, confirms the importance of Scotland’s contribution to the UK’s armed forces.
The plans, announced by Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace, a former soldier in a Scottish regiment himself, will see the army presence in Scotland further strengthened and modernised. Among the measures announced was that the First Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland will lead the British Army’s new Ranger Regiment.
The Scottish Conservative MSP said: “It is surely fitting that Scottish troops are set to pioneer the Army’s new Ranger Regiment. Soldiers from the Highlands and Islands have, for generations, been central to the fighting abilities of the British Army and that proud tradition is set to continue well into the future."
“The Defence Secretary’s announcement, which confirms that the armed forces’ presence is to be further strengthened in Scotland, reminds us of the huge contribution that Scottish servicemen and women make to the defence of our islands.”
