Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston is backing warnings from the UK’s top vet that the public should be wary of unscrupulous pet-sellers in the run-up to Christmas.

Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss has said the festive season is often a difficult time to settle a pet into a new home and that it was important people researched both the breed of animal they want but also the person selling it. Mr Halcro Johnston commented: “Pets bring great joy and companionship to many homes and, for most people, their welfare is paramount.  Unfortunately, there are some unscrupulous people out there who see the growth in demand for pets at this time of year as an opportunity to make money regardless of the welfare of the animals concerned."

“That’s why is so important that, if folk are getting a pet this Christmas, they carefully research both the pet itself – and whether it’s suitable for them and their circumstance in the long term – but also who the seller is.  Too many don’t and that’s not good for either the family or the pet itself”.
