Questions remain as to why young Highlanders have been refused job support, says MSP

Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has said that questions remain about why nearly half those applying for Job Start Payments in four out of the six council areas in the Highlands and Islands were rejected.

The Scottish Conservative MSP raised the matter in the Scottish Parliament earlier today with the Minister for Just Transition, Employment and Fair Work, Richard Lochhead.

Mr Cameron said: “It was very surprising that Mr Lochhead was completely at a loss when I asked my question, despite the fact that he actually represents one of the council areas himself.”

“The Job Start scheme was specifically designed to help young people get into work, something which has never been more important given the impact the Covid pandemic has had on many of our youngsters.  I will have been hugely disappointing for many of them to be turned down when they apply for support.”

“Even worse is that no-one seems to know why, including the minister who is supposed to be responsible.”

“It’s simply not good enough and I hope Mr Lochhead now takes some effective action to put the situation right.”
