Second isles ferry breakdown proves many ferries are ‘past their sell by date’ says Donald Cameron MSP

News that a second Calmac ferry, which serves some of Scotland’s most remote island communities, has broken down, has been lambasted by Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron.

The MV Lochnevis, which serves the small isles of Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna, has been forced out of service for repairs following several weeks of technical issues and disruption to services.  It comes following the delayed return of the MV Loch Seaforth, which also recently broke down, to the lifeline Stornoway to Ullapool route.

Donald Cameron MSP said:

“Constituents across the Highlands and Islands who rely on our ferry network are fed up with constant breakdowns, delays and cancellations as a result of the age of many of the Calmac ferries."

“This second breakdown in as many weeks shows that many of the active ferries are well past their sell by date, and decisive action needs to the taken by the SNP Government, who seem to have simply sat on their hands for the last fourteen years."

“It is clear that we urgently need a commitment to build or procure new ferries, and that commitment must come immediately.”
