Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has welcomed an announcement that a “green” whisky project on Islay has been awarded funding by the UK Government.
Protium Green Solutions, who are developing a system that uses hydrogen as a fuel source rather than oil in whisky production at the Bruichladdich Distillery, is one of four projects to have gained a share of funding totalling £11.4m.
The funding comes from Phase 2 of the Green Distilleries Competition funding which originally funded 17 projects across the UK.
Mr Cameron said: “I am very pleased to learn that Protium Green Solution working with Bruichladdich on Islay has won Phase Two funding. This investment is designed to assist these companies in decarbonising their distillery operations, which is so important as we seek to make the industry sustainable."
“Developing these new green technologies is vital to maintaining the world-beating profile of our Scotch whisky industry and it’s very encouraging to see a local distillery leading the way.”
Protium Green Solutions Limited, in partnership with Energised Environments Limited, Bruichladdich Distillery Company Limited and Deuterium Heating Limited (£2,650,041.64) based in London, England.
