Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has said that the roll-out of the UK Government’s Project Gigabit scheme to schools, hospitals and rural GP surgeries throughout the Highlands and Islands is a major step forward in improving the region’s digital infrastructure.

The project will deliver a £2 million boost for connecting 91 NHS surgeries and hospitals in the most isolated parts of Scotland to gigabit broadband while another  £1 million will help to build a ‘high-speed Highlands’ with full fibre broadband for nearly 200 schools, hospitals and GP practices.

The Scottish Conservative MSP said: “It’s difficult to exaggerate the importance of this kind of infrastructure investment when it comes to giving confidence to our rural and island communities that they will not be left behind the rest of the country."

“Among the communities to benefit in Argyll and Bute from this project are those in Bute, Jura and Mull,  as well as Campbeltown, Inveraray and Lochgoilhead on the mainland, which demonstrates a very welcome commitment on the part of the UK Government to delivering for everyone, no matter how remote they may seem."

“This investment is all the more welcome given the manifest failure of the SNP Government to deliver on its own responsibilities with regard to our trunk road network and replacing our ageing ferry fleet.”
