This year’s World Cancer Day more important than ever

This year’s World Cancer Day, which takes place on Thursday 4th February, could be the most important ever.

That’s according to Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston who is concerned that, with reluctance from some folk to be seen to be putting more pressure on the health sector as it battles the pandemic, some were still avoiding early diagnosis and treatment.

The Scottish Conservative MSP said World Cancer Day should act as a reminder to people that they should contact their doctor if they have symptoms which are causing them concern.

Highlands and Island MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston said:  “World Cancer Day is a timely reminder that people should not allow possible cancer symptoms to be ignored.  We all recognise the pressures the NHS is under because of the pandemic, but folk should not think twice about seeking a diagnosis if worried about a symptom, such as a suspicious lump."

“That this is the last thing any doctor or other health professional would want, and the Scottish Government have been very clear on this too.  We have seen some amazing advances in cancer care over the years, with survival rates doubling, but earlier intervention has also been key."

“Our NHS staff remain absolutely dedicated to providing the best possible care and the sooner treatment can be prescribed, the better the prospects.”

“So if you have any worries, please don’t wait. Speak to your doctor”.
