School children are set to return this week, however, pupils in the Highlands will be unable to benefit from the UK Government’s Eat Out to Help Out Scheme in their school canteens.

Moray Council and Aberdeenshire Council have registered their schools for the initiative, however, Highland Council has opted out of the scheme.

Yesterday, a Highland Council spokesperson said: “The Highland Council has considered the UK Government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme and determined that the cost, time and resource implications of implementing the scheme for eight days only during August are not viable.”

Today, Edward Mountain MSP commented:

“Parents will be questioning why the Highland Council is choosing to opt out of the Eat Out to Help Out initiative.

There are a huge number of school children who stood to benefit from this scheme but now cannot.

The Highland Council have said that the implementation of the scheme is not appropriate for them. However, I would certainly welcome a more detailed explanation with a cost analysis for that justification.”
