MSP backs proposals to support oil and gas jobs

Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has backed proposals to support jobs in Scotland’s oil and gas sector.

In a speech earlier today, Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross proposed the creation by UK and Scottish ministers of a joint North Sea Ministerial Working Group, and he urged the Scottish Government to work with the UK Government on the North Sea Transition Deal. He called on SNP ministers to match any funding commitment with support for local infrastructure, ports and skills.

Mr Cameron said: “I very much welcome Douglas’s initiative and his focus on jobs and livelihoods.  The oil and gas sector is a significant employer across the Highlands and Islands and there is a long tradition of people from our coastal communities in the west working offshore."

“I believe oil and gas still has a lot to offer and both Scottish and UK governments need to work together to exploit the opportunities and ensure the prospects of people employed in the industry are protected.”
