Commenting on the Accounts Commission report on council funding and the impact of Covid-19, Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston said:
“The Commission simply confirms what we have long been arguing - that the SNP Government has cynically squeezed funding for our local councils so that it can spend on its own political priorities."
“With increased pressure on councils because of the pandemic, the result is public services across the Highlands and Islands under severe strain, deteriorating local infrastructure and increasing council tax."
“Unless we see a drastic change, that pressure on local services will continue well into the future. And the responsibility for that will lay firmly at the door of an SNP Government in Edinburgh which focuses too much of its attention on the Central Belt and on its obsession with constitutional manoeuvrings.”
