Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has welcomed the decision of Argyll and Bute Council to make an additional budget allocation to ensure that all public conveniences in Argyll and Bute can be opened year-round.
The decision to allocate £330,000 which will allow the toilets to be maintained to the enhanced COVID cleaning specification set out in Scottish Government guidance, was confirmed to Mr Cameron when he contacted the council on behalf of a constituent.
Mr Cameron said: “I have been approached by local people, including disabled people, who have been very upset by the loss of these facilities, which has had a severe impact on their ability to get out and about."
“I appreciate that Argyll and Bute Council has been operating under very severe financial constraints, due to persistent under-funding from the Scottish Government, and would like to congratulate them on their decision to focus resources on opening these facilities."
“It’s the right decision and I know it will be much appreciated by local people who depend on them.”
Mr Cameron added: “ I would also like to take this opportunity to highlight the contribution being carried out by volunteers and community groups in keeping other toilet facilities open."
“It’s very heartening to see so much good work going on across Argyll and Bute.”
