Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron is backing the demand of the chief executive of Stornoway-based haulier DR Macleod for radical action to overhaul the CalMac ferry fleet.

Donald Macleod described the current status of the fleet as “killing business”.

Mr Cameron said: “Communities across my region are close to despair about the state of the ferry fleet, and the utter failure of the SNP Government to get on top of the situation."

“It is a matter of public record that during the last Parliament, they failed to deliver a single new ferry, and were severely criticised for their role in the botched delivery of two new vessels for the Clyde and Hebridean network.  This is costing jobs and livelihoods and putting at risk our economic recovery from the Covid pandemic."

“It is imperative that the new minister gets a grip and we don’t have to wait even longer for a solution to what has been allowed to become a national scandal.”
