Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has added his voice to warnings for motorists to take extra care due to the risk of collisions with deer as the nights draw in.

Mr Halcro Johnston issued his warning after NatureScot, – in conjunction with Transport Scotland and Traffic Scotland – announced that it was placing warning messages at key locations on a number of trunk roads including the A9 and A82.

He said: “Those of us who travel by road around rural parts of the country need to take account of the fact that, as the nights draw in, there is an increased risk of colliding with deer.  This can be a very distressing and potentially dangerous experience so taking extra care, especially when driving through wooded areas where deer can appear on the road with very little warning, is really important."

“I welcome the announcement that special warning signs are going up on the trunk roads where collisions risks are highest, but we need to be aware that deer are widespread and can be in suburban and even urban locations too.”
