Commenting on the UK Government’s announcement of ring-fenced support for tidal power in the next round of Contracts for Difference, Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston said:

“This is an extremely welcome announcement from the UK Government and represents a step-change for tidal energy in the UK, with the potential to propel it from a largely experimental technology to an integral part of our electricity network. The Highlands and Islands – especially in the Northern Isles - have pioneered advancements in renewable energy, and marine energy in particular. This £20 million investment shows a real commitment to tidal technology – and would make a real difference to the renewables sector."

“As we work to reduce emissions and towards net zero, it is important that we look to diverse sources of clean energy. Harnessing clean tidal energy can not only support the UK’s climate change objectives, but also help to support the world-leading skills and renewables jobs we have built in our region.”

A UK Government press release on the announcement, with quotes from the BEIS Secretary, Energy Minister, Secretary of State for Scotland as well as industry representatives is available here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-government-announces-biggest-investment-into-britains-tidal-power
