Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron is urging the SNP Government to reverse its policy of scrapping Scotland’s oil and gas industry.
The Scottish Conservative MSP gave his backing to UK Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng who tweeted earlier today: “In an uncertain world, it would be complete madness to turn off North Sea oil and gas. The UK Government will continue to back domestic production for our energy security as we transition to cheap, clean power.”
Mr Cameron said: “The policy of the SNP/Green coalition ignores the fact that we are still dependent on oil and gas for some time to come, while we transition to net zero. The SNP policy is based on ideology and ignores the implications for energy security.
“If we scrap domestic production we will have to import energy at a time when prices are going through the roof and availability is dictated by the whims of people like Vladimir Putin.
“The SNP should just ignore the Greens and do what is plainly in the national interest, which is to take advantage of the availability of oil and gas here in Scotland, and provide job security to the thousands of people who work in the industry, especially those in the Highlands and Islands.”
