Councillor Ruraidh Stewart, Leader of the Highland Conservative Group, alongside Caol & Mallaig Councillor Liz Saggers, have expressed their opposition to the proposed establishment of new national parks in Lochaber and Skye.
Representing Skye, Cllr Stewart emphasised the necessity for any development in the Highland area, including the proposed national park, to align with the aspirations and requirements of the local communities. "My priority, as a local councillor, is to ensure that the voices of residents are heard and their interests are safeguarded". After attending numerous consultation events Cllr Stewart highlighted a widespread opposition to the national park proposal among his constituents and stated that there is growing concern that national parks may contribute to local economic and social disparities. "My inbox is full of messages that confirm that the majority of the local community does not want Skye to progress this proposal to the next stage. National Park status should enhance, not hinder, the prospects of our young people and residents in housing and employment. However, looking at the existing National Parks, I don't think that is the case. " Added Cllr Stewart
Cllr Stewart acknowledged some benefits of the existing national parks, particularly around visitor management, but raised concerns about the economic rationale behind expanding or even maintaining these parks. "While Cairngorm and Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Parks have their merits, it's time we look at whether they truly deliver value for money." He pointed out that a significant portion of their budgets seems to be allocated to administrative costs, rather than focusing on community-driven priorities. He argued against creating an additional layer of bureaucracy, suggesting that these funds could be better spent on more critical needs like healthcare, education, and road development.
Echoing these concerns, Cllr Saggers, who recently voiced her opposition to the proposal at the Highland Council Lochaber area business meeting, added, " In Lochaber much of the tourism facilities are fully stretched each summer. Busy roads and the serious lack of parking already causes much frustration to visitors and locals alike. Creating a National Park before providing much improved infrastructure would only exacerbate the situation."
In conclusion, Highland Conservative Councillors will oppose expanding national parks in Lochaber and Skye and advocate for investment in essential services over administrative costs to protect local interests and balance environmental conservation with socioeconomic needs.
